The Story Behind It
What Exactly Is a Shima Enaga?
The Shima Enaga is not a completely separate species.
It is a subspecies of the Long-tailed Tit (Aegithalos caudatus).
The Ornithological Society of Japan lists it as Aegithalos caudatus japonicus. It is a common resident in the plains and mountains of Hokkaido.
Long-tailed Tits are tiny birds.
Their total length is around 13–14 centimeters, but almost half of that length comes from their long tail.
That long tail also explains the Japanese name enaga.
It is said to resemble the long handle of a traditional Japanese water ladle.
Why Does the Shima Enaga Have Such a White Face?
This is what makes the Hokkaido bird so easy to recognize.
Long-tailed Tit subspecies found farther south in Japan usually have dark, eyebrow-like markings on the sides of the head.
Adult Shima Enaga, however, lack these bold dark eyebrows.
Their heads appear almost completely white.
Add two tiny black eyes and a small black beak, and the result is a face that looks almost like a simple cartoon character.
Interestingly, young Shima Enaga do not always look this way.
Juveniles can have darker markings around their heads before developing the cleaner white appearance of adults.
So the famous “Snow Fairy” face is an adult look.
Why Does the Shima Enaga Look So Round in Winter?
This may be the secret behind many famous Shima Enaga photographs.
The bird itself does not suddenly become much larger in winter.
Bird feathers work as insulation by trapping air close to the body. In cold conditions, birds can fluff their feathers, increasing those insulating air spaces and making themselves appear rounder.
Combine that fluffy shape with a white head and snowy surroundings, and the Shima Enaga can look almost perfectly spherical.
A tiny snowball.
With a tail.
That appearance helps explain why the Japanese government’s English magazine describes the Shima Enaga as the “snow fairy.”
How Does Such a Tiny Bird Survive a Hokkaido Winter?
Cute does not mean fragile.
A Hokkaido winter can bring deep snow, strong winds, and temperatures far below freezing.
Shima Enaga survive partly by being social.
In winter, Long-tailed Tits form family-based flocks, searching together for food. They can also join other small woodland birds while foraging.
In Sapporo’s Asahiyama Memorial Park, Shima Enaga are especially easy to encounter from roughly November through March, when several families may form groups.
Their constant movement is another surprise.
They do not usually sit still and pose like a model.
A flock may suddenly appear, move quickly from branch to branch, and disappear again within minutes.
Finding one requires a little patience.
Listen Before You Look
Here is a useful trick for travelers.
Do not search only with your eyes.
Listen.
Shima Enaga make small calls often described in Japanese as sounds like “jururu” and high tsu-tsu-tsu notes.
Asahiyama Memorial Park even recommends listening for these calls when trying to find the birds.
You may hear the flock before you see it.
Then look toward the upper branches and follow the movement.
Birdwatching becomes almost like a small treasure hunt.
Why Did the Shima Enaga Become a Symbol of Cute Hokkaido?
The Shima Enaga has always lived in Hokkaido.
Its celebrity status is much newer.
The Ministry of the Environment notes that the bird has become especially popular in recent years and now appears frequently on Hokkaido souvenir packaging.
It is easy to understand why.
Its appearance already looks like a character design:
- Pure white face
- Tiny black eyes
- Tiny triangular beak
- Round body
- Long elegant tail
And winter photography made that appearance even more memorable.
Today, Shima Enaga-inspired sweets, stationery, plush toys, and other souvenirs can be found around Hokkaido.
A tiny wild bird has become one of the island’s unofficial cute ambassadors.
How to Find a Shima Enaga in Hokkaido
Winter Gives You a Better Chance
Shima Enaga live in Hokkaido year-round.
But for travelers, winter is one of the easiest and most beautiful times to look for them.
At Asahiyama Memorial Park in Sapporo, observation opportunities are rated particularly high from November through March. The birds gather in winter groups, and leafless trees can also make small birds easier to spot.
Two places around Sapporo where Shima Enaga are regularly reported include:

- Nishioka Park
Nishioka Park notes that Shima Enaga can be seen throughout the park and are encountered more often in winter than summer.
But remember:
They are wild birds.
There is never a guarantee you will see one.

Watch Quietly and Never Chase Them
If you find a Shima Enaga, give it space.
Do not chase the flock from tree to tree just to get a photograph.
Do not make loud noises to attract them.
And do not feed wild birds unless an official facility specifically allows and manages feeding.
Sapporo park staff encourage visitors to observe quietly rather than pursue the birds, noting that calm behavior allows wildlife to move naturally around visitors.
A photograph is wonderful.
But watching a wild Shima Enaga behave naturally is even better.
